Background:
300 years ago, the planet Dahna was invaded by the Renans, inhabitants of their sister planet Rena. Lacking the means to counter the powers of their oppressors - who brought with them both heavily armored soldiers, monsters known as zeugles, and powerful magics called Astral Artes - its peoples were subjugated and the continents split into 5 kingdoms, each led by a Renan Lord.

The Dahnans were robbed of their history, their culture and their freedom, used by their conquerors to farm the natural elemental power of their world (called Astral Energy) for their own purposes: the Crown Contest, where every 10 years the Lord who gathered the most Astral Energy would be made the Sovereign of Rena. They did so through embedding special stones into the native Dahnans, so that they could draw that energy out from all toil and work in each region.

Then a masked Dahnan amnesiac who couldn't feel pain and a cursed Renan traitor who'd stole an artifact from the local Renan Lord crossed paths in Calaglia. Events led to them teaming up and then kicking said Lord's ass, blasting wide open the Gates of Fire while doing so.

The world of Dahna as everyone knew it was about to change.

Two weeks after these events, a young girl stumbled through the gates, running into the pair responsible, and with that, Rinwell was about to be caught up in events of a lifetime. An orphan growing up in Cysloden, frozen capital of the neighbouring nation of Cyslodia, Rinwell was part of a resistance group called the Silver Swords. Sent to ask the leaders of the first truly successful uprising for aid in fighting back against the Renans, Rinwell would be guide to Alphen and Shionne, along with Zephyr, the leader of the Crimson Crows, the Calaglian resistance group.

Though glad for their aid, Rinwell made no secret of her distrust of Renans, making travel with Shionne an uncomfortable affair. Nonetheless, beggars could not be choosers, especially when her people desperately needed aid, and as they traveled back to her home, she explained the situation.

Perpetually night and eternally frozen, Cyslodia was ruled by the Renan Lord Ganabelt with iron fist, and had not only the eyes of his Renan troops on the people, but even had native Dahnans themselves spying on their fellows. "Nobody trusts nobody", for anyone could turn you in to the Bureau of Civil Affairs, better known as the "Snake Eyes" to the natives, if they thought you were acting suspicious. It wasn't unheard of for entire families to disappear from the local villages for crimes assumed and imaginary.

Braving the snows to make it to a nearby village, the new group got to see this in action, discovering that one local agent was known to Zephyr: a young man named Law. In the fighting that followed, Zephyr was captured, and the group fled, but not before Rinwell had revealed a closely kept secret: she could cast astral artes, just like the Renans, and had knocked Law down in Zephyr's defense. Dahnan astrals users (known as mages) were incredibly rare, considered myths by others even before the Renan occupation, and Rinwell begged that Alphen and Shionne keep her abilities secret.

Such a request would soon be pointless: once they reached Cysloden and made contact with the Silver Swords, they soon learned that Zephyr had been brought to the prison there. Swearing allegiance, plans were made to rescue him, only for everything go to hell VERY quickly as the Silver Sword's HQ was discovered. Sticking with Shionne and Alphen, Rinwell lent them what aid she could, but it would soon prove not enough - freedom for Zephyr would be short lived, with an unanticipated betrayal pulling the rugs out from under everyone's feet. Exactly as Ganabelt intended.

Narrowly escaping, and taking time to mourn the destruction of the local would-be uprising, the group opted to retaliate before their window of opportunity could be lost. Enlisting Law's aid, they would successfully scale the prison tower and eventually take down Ganabelt with vengeful fists to the face. And when it came time for Shionne and Alphen to move on, Rinwell asked to go with them. Both to avoid the attention of being a Dahnan artes user, and because she wanted to help them with the goal of defeating the remaining Renan Lords and freeing Dahnans from slavery.

But it wasn't the real reason why she went with them. With the successful defeat of two Lords, Rinwell knew that they stood the greatest chance of meeting and defeating the others. And by traveling with them, she in turn would have the chance to learn the true identity of the Renan Lord who slew her parents and her entire clan.

This opportunity would arise further into their journey, after arriving in the region of Mahag Saar, known as the Valley of the Four Winds. On arrival in this region's capital, they learned that the local resistance group (the Dark Wings) had overthrown their Lord but in doing so, they'd freely spent Dahnan lives and homes to accomplish this task. The Lord had fled in the chaos, and the party offered to seek her out. Given a false lead, they instead found old ruins that had been repurposed for the lord's experiments, but no clues on where they'd gone next.

It was only on return that they discovered that the Lord had been captured and was to be executed.

It was a trap, leading to many deaths, and the confirmation that Rinwell had been looking for: here was the Lord responsible for the death of her parents. Giving in to the hatred and rage she felt for that person, to the shock of her party, Rinwell stepped forward with full intent of killing the taunting Lord. Only to be stopped by Law, who could not allow her to give in to those feelings. In spite of threatening to kill him too if he didn't get out of her way, Rinwell eventually collapsed in tears, deliberately missing him. The Renan Lord mocked her further, before siccing an abomination on the group and fleeing while they were busy.

No one blamed Rinwell for her actions, and even Shionne reached out to reassure her that if hatred gave her strength, then she should use it. But she needed to consider if that death was truly what she wanted to live for, and what would she do next once her revenge was complete. The choice of what to do with the Lord was given to her once they found them, and this decision consumed her thoughts as they chased the Lord out onto the ocean proper, and boarded the floating fortress. When they finally defeated the Lord, Rinwell could not give up that hatred. But she would not let it define her either. Choosing to spare the Lord, she wanted justice for all the atrocities that had been committed at their hands.

Only for that justice to be snatched away, as the Renan Lord of Water appeared, slaying their peer and kidnapping Shionne in an effort to strike at Alphen. Calling on his powers, the last Renan Lord sank the ship out from under them, sending them into the churning sea.

Washing ashore some time later, the survivors regrouped, coming to terms with defeat being pushed into their arms in place of victory, along with Alphen's returning memory. Alphen being shaken by these left Rinwell worried in return - he'd been something of a rock after taking over from Zephyr, but they both wanted to do what they could to aid Shionne. Even if he needed a reminder of the fact. Rinwell herself didn't want to be held back by hatred now that the Renan Lord that had haunted her nightmares was dead, and she threw herself into the effort to seek out and save their lost ally. This led to a terrifying arrival in Ganath Haros, where brainwashed Renans and Dahnans alike were sacrificed for the sake of the Crown Contest, and Shionne herself was almost catatonic from trauma.

The showdown with the Water Lord led to the party finally defeating the last of the Renan leadership, accomplishing something few had ever believed would be, could be possible: they succeeded in their efforts to overthrow their conquerors and free Dahna — only for an explosion of power to reveal to them parties heretofore unknown. And the sudden revelation that there was a great deal more to the Contest than they had ever realised...

It is here, with the city Ganath Haros left in their care and silent Lenegis hanging high above the party like the sword of Damocles, that Rinwell finds herself being returned quite suddenly to Abraxas: a little wiser, a little more open to possibilities and other people, and with heightened worry for the people she's left behind as they face an unknown future.

Suitability:
Recent events back home posed a question for Rinwell: what will you live for, once you no longer have hatred to sustain you?

At the time, she hadn't figured out the answer to that question. And now, separated from the first real friends she's ever had amidst circumstances dire and disastrous, overcoming recent trauma in a new place and with new people will be An Experience. How will this shape her answer going forward? Whether or not she learns to cling less to learned prejudices, Rinwell will do her best. It remains to be seen whether or not that'll be good enough in this world.

Rinwell is naturally inquisitive and excited by learning, and she's no stranger to travel thanks to her journey with Alphen and the gang. Ruins are VERY exciting (almost as much as books!) because they tell a story about the World That Was, and while she may no longer be on Dahna, she'd be especially drawn to anything that could reveal more about the source of the magics in this world. She will certainly want to learn more about the Singularity, particularly as she won't trust factions who want to take it for themselves, regardless of reason or what side they're on (destruction or control).

Getting to interact with others stuck in the same circumstance (both those who do and do not natively have magic) means she'll have a chance to sit back and think about her powers here, in this place. Hers are purely destructive in nature, but how she decides to use them? That's part of figuring out the kind of person she wants to be. Revealing her own capabilities over time would be a process with the right group, and with the wrong one?

Well, there's always plenty of room for a bad influence in a vulnerable young life.

Powers:

• Astral Artes - Rinwell is a mage, one of the last Dahnan users of astral artes on her world. There are six astral elements: fire, water, wind, earth, light and dark. Of the latter two, light is exclusive to Dahna, while Dark is with Rena.

Rinwell, being Dahnan, is natively aligned to Light and as such cannot use any dark aligned spells. She cannot use poison or curse spells, no dark magic of any kind. light is more synonymous with electricity and brightness, than outright holy magic of other places. Her abilities are predominantly destructive elemental spells and she has no access to healing artes; perhaps she might have learned such later but the loss of her clan at a young age is forever a loss of knowledge that she may never gain.

With some focus, basic elemental attacks can be called simply by referring to what they are. However, to cast a powerful Arte, she must chant words in order to focus on gathering the necessary energy to her, before unleashing it in an attack; if interrupted, the energy is lost and she must begin once more. Rinwell can also hold a spell once called, though not indefinitely, the action charging it to make it a far stronger version of itself. Chaining it with regular attacks can lead to powerful combos known as Hidden Artes, occasionally triggered in response to "Blah blah blah magic!" A handy list of spells can be found here.

Finally, Rinwell has two "support" artes that she can cast on others - Sharpness, to improve someone's attack power (physical and magical), and Concentrate, which improves targeting and breaking through the enemy's defenses.

• Astral Sensitivity - Rinwell is sensitive to high concentrations of magical energy, and as her skill with astral artes strengthens, so to does her ability to detect it and trace back to a potential source. At this time, Rinwell isn't quite strong enough to "hear" anything from magical energy, but she may be able to tell different types of Abraxas' magic apart as she gets used to exposure from the Singularity.

• Magic Cancel - A clan secret technique, Rinwell can cast a special arte that knocks down her enemies, particularly useful against other spell casters. She essentially steals the astral energy of whatever spell her target was casting; this prevents that target from using that specific spell for a certain period of time. She can also hold and use that spell for herself. However, once she has used the spell herself or allowed the magic to dissipate, Rinwell cannot recast it. She cannot permanently learn spells this way. She is limited in how often she can cast it, as well.

In RP terms, it's a spell interrupt that would require permission from whoever I'm RPing with to use it; it's not guaranteed to work, but when it does, could have some very interesting consequences for those involved. There is no limit for the kind of spell she can interrupt, but as she cannot use Dark magic of any kind, any energy from that sort of spell would be released into the aether again.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.
While there's quite a few VERY key events that happen in game, the one that I think stands out as a moment of change for Rinwell is when she actively chooses to stand and defend someone with her artes for the first time, after a lifetime of hiding what she could do.

When she made it to Calaglia to recruit help from those who'd overthrown the Fire Lord, she met Zephyr, leader of the Crimson Crows resistance group. A man who'd known loss and sacrifice of his own, and still fought to free his people, he showed her what was likely some of the first genuine care since the loss of her family, in spite of knowing nothing about her. It's amazing what a simple head-pat and fatherly reassurance could do when others viewed her with (understandable) suspicion.

Coupled with his natural Parental Authority aura, he earned her trust in a short time as they traveled back to her home.

"Hide somewhere till it's over, you hear me?" When he asked her to stay out of sight while they investigated Messia 224, the first town they arrived at in Cyslodia, she was initially reluctant to let them go ahead - she had to get them to the capital! But they were determined to do the right thing, and face down the Snakes Eyes who'd arrived to harass the Dahnans enslaved there. But when she saw him refusing to fight a particular young soldier (who totally doesn't join the party later or anything) who laid blow after blow against him, though he would not fight back, she couldn't stand by any further and cast her first arte in defense of someone else.

That choice, to fight for someone else, was no doubt also born of her own regrets, knowing her family died while she was hidden away and could do nothing, in spite of the fact she'd been a far younger child then. Though ultimately Zephyr was still captured and taken away, that was the first of many steps in choosing to use her artes for the sake of others, and find her own way of following in his footsteps.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?
She is, at heart, a good kid, who truly does want to free her world and her people from slavery and oppression, so no one else has to hide away as her family did. However, "Renans bad, Dahnans good" is a very inflexible binary that has defined much of Rinwell's youth so far.

As she's traveled, Rinwell has had to field the discomfort of the existence of grey, particularly as she's gotten to know two Renans in particular (Shionne and Dohalim) who defy the rigid stereotyping of their race that she's held for so long. Learning that all you've believed for so long may be wrong and needs to change is a pretty daunting thing to face, and it will be an ongoing struggle for her to set aside her own prejudices even in a new world like this one.

Events on Dahna eventually culminated in finally confronting the source of her hatred and driving need for vengeance. And with that confrontation, a key question being posed to Rinwell: what will you live for, once you no longer have hatred to sustain you?

At the time, she hadn't figured out the answer to that question when posed to her. Overcoming her recent traumas in a new (old) place with new (old) people will be An Experience. An Experience balanced out by having those she learned to trust still being present here, alongside new people now stuck under similar circumstances.

Whether or not she learns to cling less to learned prejudices, Rinwell will do her best. (It remains to be seen whether or not that'll be good enough..)

What quality or qualities do they admire most?
Being able to learn and grow from your past, and being able to accept it and move on without forgetting the lessons that it taught you, good or bad. She also admires kindness, and the willingness to listen to others, though not being a push over and doing what they ask is also respectable.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
Rinwell spent a long time resenting her magic. First, because it was the reason her family spent so long in hiding. Then, because it was the reason her family died at the hands of a Renan Lord. Here was something she'd been forced to learn but never use, and had led to so much death. She struggles with accepting her powers and the scope of what she may be capable of accordingly.

Being in a world where magic is far more commonplace for all may give her some much needed perspective - though the fearmongering that had been begun by Goro when she was last in Cadens, and the conflict between the Free Cities and Thorne on her return will likely make her question being open with displays of power.

What is their sign, and why?
The Magician. Aside from being very on the nose (Rinwell's people were called mages once upon a time), it fits rather well with her focused studies, be it on history, myths or magic. She wants to learn all that she can, so that she can do more for others, and this sign reflects that best.
